"You Can't Jail the Revolution" Trial of the Chicago Eight Poster

Poster

Poster in support of the Chicago Eight with Fred Hampton quote "You Can't Jail the Revolution." Full text reads "You Can't Jail the Revolution Stop the Trial Free the Conspiracy 8." Measures 25" x 20" inches. Red text an illustrations on a light yellow background. Has an illustration of a man raising his fist in the air in the style of the Black Panthers. This poster was made in support of the Chicago Eight, a group of radical activists brought to trial for allegedly inciting the riot at the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago. The Eight included Panther secretary Bobbie Seale, Abbie Hoffman, Jerry Rubin, Tom Hayden, David Dellinger, Lee Weiner, John Froines, and Rennie Davis. The group is also referred to as the Chicago Seven, because Seale was removed from the group and tried separately due to his total lack of compliance with the proceedings. Five men were charged with conspiracy, though their charges were later reversed on appeal, while two were acquitted at the start. Eight police officers were also charged, but their charges were either dropped or they were acquitted. This trial was a major cultural flashpoint in a highly politically active moment, and drew support not only from political affinity groups, but cultural figures the world round, and also has been the basis for several films. The legal victory of the Chicago Eight was a rare but highly public legal victory for the activist Left given the courts' generally hostile terrain during the politically charged 1960s and 70s. The poster is exceptionally clear and is unfolded. In near fine condition.
