Disabled Male in a Large College Graduation Albumen Photograph- 1880s San Francisco

Disability , Education

Original Photo

Large albumen photo of college graduates. 8 graduates both male and female with one male who appears to be disabled. circa 1880s. Measures 17.5 x 22 inches. Mounted to photographer's board from Elite studio, San Francisco, CA. Men wear formal suits, two of them with large mustaches fashionable at the time, and women wear white formal dresses with puffed sleeves and bustles. The graduates all clasp their rolled diplomas. The disabled man has large mustache and stands with his shoulder noticeably hunched to his jaw line, his frame small and significantly shorter than the other men. During the 19th century people with disabilities were considered unfit to contribute to society, serving on the margins, as spectacles in entertainment or sent to asylums where they lived out invisible lives. Their mistreatment continued through World War I when the U.S government began providing rehabilitation for disabled veterans. FDR, the first president with a disability, would be an advocate for disabled rights while still operating under the assumption that his own was a shameful condition. Toning around edges of board does not affect image itself. There is a 2-inch red line marks top of image pointing to one subject's head. Verso marked in red ink with some student names including the disabled man named "Parkhurst" and "Class of ____." Overall in very good condition.
