John F. Kennedy Funeral Photo Archive

Photo Archive

Photo archive consisting of 37 original black and white silver gelatin photographs of the 1963 funeral of JFK on the third day following his assassination. Photos measure 3.5" x 3.5" inches. Datestamped "Nov 63" on upper margin of recto. Several of them are captioned on verso, usually identifying other world leaders who attended the procession. LBJ, Truman, Eisenhower, Charles de Gaulle, Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia, Soviet diplomat Anastas Mikoyan, Prince Philip, Konrad Adenauer of West Germany, and others are pictured in attendance, usually in their official vehicles but occasionally on foot. President Kennedy's casket is captured in one photo, placed in a horse-drawn caisson, draped in an American flag and accompanied by a Marine Corps Honor Guard. Also pictured is the riderless horse "Black Jack", a symbol used to honor fallen military officers, in this case the Commander in Chief. There are a few photos of D.C. landmarks such as the Washington Monument and the White House. These photos were taken by a seminary student Jack Blonski, at the state funeral on Monday, November 25, where representatives from over 90 countries attended. After the Requiem Mass at St. Matthew's Cathedral, the late president was buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. An intriguing photo archive which wonderfully captures the gloom and reverence of this historic moment. In very good condition.
