Title page bears signature and inscription by Guy that reads, "To Donna, Best Wishes, Rosa Guy." Cover shows two young girls, back to back but bound together by hair worn in afros, their bodies enclosing 2 smaller figures of the girls talking and smiling together. The story follows 2 teenage girls, both outsiders, navigating racial and socioeconomic oppression and finding each other along their way. A founding member of the Harlem Writers Guilt in 1950, Rosa Guy went on to become one of the most acclaimed authors of young adult fiction in the 20th century, known for writing openly on subjects of race and sexuality. Writing during a time when pop cultural representations of black life for young Americans was often one-dimensional and exploitive, her work provided an alternative beloved by readers for its authenticity and candor.
