African Liberation Day was first recognized in 1972 after Owusu Sadaukai visited the liberated zones of Mozambique and witnessed the struggle to build a nation there. He identified international solidarity as a pressing need within the African Diaspora. In his letter urging a national day of solidarity for African Liberation, Sadaukai identified the objectives as raising awareness for the conditions in Southern African, educating African Americans on the shared struggle between nations and organizing a national protest again U.S foreign policy in Southern Africa.
