The Black Battallion - 1909

Pamphlet

Joseph B. Foraker. The Black Battalion. Washington: 1909. First edition. Original paper wrappers. 6 x 9 inches. 54 pages. Stapled pamphlet. A speech by Senator Foraker of Ohio in defense of the Brownsville black troops who were dishonorably discharged without pensions because white townspeople accused them of local crimes despite the testimony of their commanders that the men had been in their barracks all night. The story received attention again in the early 1970s and a military investigation was conducted. The men were exonerated and their records expunged, but there was no compensation for their families. Called the Brownsville Affair, material on the incident is very scarce. This text describes in detail both the event itself and the controversy in its aftermath. OCLC locates just 7 copies in all libraries worldwide of this scarce pamphlet . Chipping at top edge of front wrapper. Foxing to wrappers. In very good condition.
