Photo Album

Photo album of a group of outdoorsmen traveling across the united states mountains of California, Hawaii, and Alaska. 1930's. The album consist of 179 black and white silver gelatin photographs. Many with handwritten captions. Album size 9.25" x 6.5" inches. Photos range in size from 1.5" x 2.75" to 5" x 4", with most around 3.5" x 2.5" inches. Original red covers. This annotated photo album depicts a group of friends who were avid rock climbers and travelers. Many images of the group inthe majestic Yosemite landscape. A few of the subjects, but not the owner, are named, including Jack Beckett and Dick Connett. Jack Beckett was likely John C. Beckett of Palo Alto, an accomplished climber who reached the peaks of the Sierra Nevadas before the age of 18. Connett was an employee of the Yosemite Park Co. for decades and former manager of Camp Curry and the Awahnee Hotel in Yosemite. Beckett, Connett, the owner and several other friends were members of the ROTC and grew up in Palo Alto There are many photographs from locations within California, most prominently Yosemite and the Sierra Nevadas, but also Palo Alto, Los Angeles area, Mono Lake, and elsewhere. There are also photos of their travels to Alaska, to the Taku Glacier, the deepest and thickest alpine temperate glacier known in the world, and the Alaska-Juneau Gold Mine. There are several photos of British Columbia taken on the way to Alaska, including of Lake Bennett which snakes along the border between the U.S. and Canada, the White Pass and Yukon Railroad, as well as traditional indigenous totems near Prince Rupert. There are also many photos of Hawaii taken during a ROTC Navy Cruise, showing multiple islands, the Kiluea Crater, a pineapple field, a Mormon temple, and the USS New York docked in Honolulu. In Yosemite, where the majority of the images are taken, this crew of friends congregated around the "Big Trees Lodge", a modest cabin in a redwood grove. One photo captioned "The Crew Summer 1938" shows this band of travelers sat upon the steps of the Big Trees Lodge. There are several stunning photos of waterfalls within the park: Nevada Falls, Yosemite Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, and Vernal Falls. Many photos of Yosemite in deep snow, some as late as May, and of Badger Pass Ski Area, California's oldest ski resort. Other iconic locations within park are also depicted, including giant drive-through redwood Wawona, Half Dome, Glacier Point, Lake Tioga, Tuolumne Meadows, the Royal Arches, and more. Minor separation of fabric at spine and corners bumped, but the image quality is excellent and the album is overall in very good condition.
