[World War I] [Nursing] Printed and hand colored nursing award certificate by the Holt School in Liverpool. 1918. Measures 12" x 17" inches. Attractive hand-colored illustration featuring an 8.5" x 8.5" inch medallion with a Red Cross nurse at its center, her portrait the center of a tree surrounded by branches and supported by trunk with smaller portraits of women at work in traditionally male occupations, their images between the branches that surround the central figure. A bright floral border surrounds the medallion. Beneath it reads the credited Tennyson quote "The woman's cause is man's: they rise or sink together, dwarfed or godlike, bond or free. Yoked in all exercise of noble end." The certificate was awarded by the Liverpool Education Committee during World War I to celebrate the part played by women in the war effort. "This, the fourth certificate awarded by the Liverpool Education Comittee in pace of a prize during the great war". Blank verso.Small half-inch tear on margin does not affect the text or image. Illustration bright and detailed. Overall very good condition.
