[Women in Nursing]. Photo archive of 7 albumen photos of early uniformed nurses. The 7 Photos range from 3.75" x 2" to 8" x 5" inches. Circa 1880’s -1930. Locations include Freeport, Illinois, Collingwood, Ontario, Oakland, California, Aberdeen, Chicago. The photos are mostly mounted on photographers boards. The women wear crisp white smocks, some over striped shirtwaists with broad cuffs and bonnets that evolve in shape over time. Their expressions are serious, marking their professionalism and dedication to the gravity of their work. In one portrait the subject holds what appears to be her rolled diploma suggesting a graduation portrait. These women pursued careers during decades when doing so violated social norms and often required significant personal sacrifice. Overall very good condition.Item #17873
