Albumen portrait of a female doctor in a group of 6 medical professionals. 3.5" x 3" inches. Circa 1910. Albumen print. Photo shows six medical professionals, three seated in front with three standing in back. The front row includes one male in doctor's white coat and black tie sitting front and center with the woman standing behind him also in white coat and tie. Beside him is a woman dressed in high collar and waistcoat, not medical wear, and a man in a black suit. The woman in the white coat is flanked by two nurses in uniforms, one beaming happily, the other more apprehensive. The subjects are photographed against a brick wall. The female doctor wears a strong, proud expression fitting for a pioneer in her field. The postures and positions of the figures in a mixed-gender group of medical professionals indicates the hierarchical dynamics of the time with the female doctor standing instead of sitting, subordinate to her male colleague. But her presence in the practice as a female doctor would have been extraordinary during the time. Seems to have been removed from an album due to paper on verso. Overall very good condition.Item #17857
