Two Original Photographs of African American Adults at Night School in the 1940s

Photo Archive

Small Archive of two photographs depicting adult continuing education for African Americans circa 1940s. Montgomery, Alabama and Akron, Ohio. Size of 9" x 7.25" and 9" x 5.5" inches. Black and white silver gelatin prints. The first photo was published by the Stewart Studio in Akron, Ohio, and depicts a row of six African American adults reading over an educational pamphlet with their instructor (also African-American) behind them. The other photo depicts a packed classroom full of African-American adults. There are probably at least fifty people taking a night class in this photograph. The photo is embossed with the seal of the Donner Photography Studio of Montgomery, Alabama. Many of the people photographed in this archive are quite well dressed and despite their lack of education have been able to make a better life for themselves. It was not uncommon for people who grew up in the South during the Great Depression to have only an elementary education or be illiterate. The promise of skilled and semi-skilled labor jobs in the cities that didn't require a traditional education was a dominant factor in the migration patterns of Black people in this time period. Some soiling to margins and small cracks in these photos, though they are overall in very good condition.
