At the Big House. Indianapolis: Bobb Merrill, 1904. 348 pp. Gift inscription on ffep. Illustrator: Blaisdell, E. Warde. Size: 8vo - over 7 3/4 in - 9 3/4 inches tall. A collection of folk tales from African Americans in southeastern Virginia and Cherokees in North Carolina. The stories from both cultures are "presented in Negro dialect in order more strongly to emphasize the resemblance between them." The stories tend to be fables delivering moral lessons and involving anthropomorphic animals. Plenty of illustrations throughout the text. Boards have some rubbing, corners bumped; some spotting, dampstaining on front panel, but pages are clean and binding sound.
