It soon advances, however, to the Early Modern period (17th century and onwards), and focuses especially on the medical innovations of the 19th century and medicine in the American context. The book grapples seriously with Eclectic medicine, which was was a branch of American medicine which made use of botanical remedies along with other substances and physical therapy practices, popular in the latter half of the 19th and first half of the 20th centuries. It closes by discussing "medical freedom", medical institutions, and legislation that affected the field of medicine in the United States.
