Handbill

Original vintage Flyer from the National Union of Clerks that calls upon clerks to "think about their wages, their office conditions, and how things can be improved." London: Twentieth Century Press, 1912.Double sided. 8" x 5" inches. The flyer warns of the inevitable danger of undercutting wages in the absence of clerks together under a union banner setting the rates for their labor. The Union declares its aims to be "shortening the hours of work, securing by law that offices shall be made comfortable and suitable from a health point of view, and see that clerks are fairly treated by their employers in such matters as holidays, salary during sickness, and references." The Union closes with the promise that "You will...find a real human fellowship of men and women with similar jobs who want to help one another." By 1941, British shorthand writers, typists, clerks, secretaries, and administrative workers of both sexes would be united in Clerical and Administrative Workers' Union This handbill is in very good condition. At the time that this description is being written, no copies are recorded in American institutions. OCLC search results are at best an estimate and can vary over time.
