The Woman’s Journal, Lucy Stone’s women’s rights newspaper, Original 1874 Issue

Newspaper

The Woman’s Journal. Boston, Chicago, and St. Louis: 16 May 1874. Volume 5, Number 20. 8 pages. 26” x 18” inches. This original newspaper was one of the first publications that advocated for the full citizenship of women in the United States. It was the mouthpiece of some of the most prominent women's rights advocates of the age and was edited by Julia Ward Howe. The newspaper consisted of many short articles on developments within the suffrage struggle across the country. One particularly extensive example was the coverage of the Mass Convention of the Michigan State Women’s Suffrage Association, which was a “mass meeting of all interested in this measure…among them nearly half of the members of the State Senate, and a large number of members of the House.” Although women’s suffrage would not be achieved until 1918, the sense of momentum is present in the publication. Overall in very good condition.
