The early sections deal with his upbringing as a slave and his efforts to get an education. Washington details his transition from student to teacher, and outlines his own development as an educator and founder of the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama. Through reflection on his own life, Washington is able to propose his view that education is the key to advancement for Black people in America. In the final chapters, Washington describes his career as a public speaker and civil rights activist. Some soiling on covers and remainders of a paste down on binding. Top edge is toned. Occasional tape strips and blemishes in main text block, though does not impede reading. Ex library copy with stamp and library card in the rear free endpaper.
