Memorial Address on the Life and Character of Abraham Lincoln Delivered at the Request of Both Houses of the Congress
Book
BANCROFT, GEORGE. Memorial Address on the Life and Character of Abraham Lincoln Delivered at the Request of Both Houses of the Congress of America Before them, in the House of Representatives at Washington, on the 12th of February, 1866. Washington, Government Printing Office, 1866.Tall octavo, 69 pages. Original brown pebbled cloth, slightly pitted, with gilded lettering and blindstamp on cover. Frontispiece of Lincoln with tissue guard. Bancroft, a prominent statesman and diplomat in his own right, gives a moving tribute to then recently deceased President Lincoln. The address comprehensively covers Lincoln’s origins, the evils of slavery, and foreign affairs, but its thrust is in its depiction of his character - a principled, humble self-regard as an “accidental, temporary instrument” by which Americans would “rise up and preserve the Union.” This piece is in good condition, with minor chipping on cover, light wear on boards, and light foxing on front and back free endpaper. Overall still very good condition.Item #17239
