Elion’s research led to the creation of many important drugs, including AZT an antiviral medication to prevent and treat HIV/AIDS. In 1988, she was the only woman who won a Nobel Prize that year. Other drugs have major impacts as well, including the first immunosuppressive drug to fight organ rejection in transplant patients, and the first drug to treat herpes infections. Reflecting on her life’s work, Elion talked about the impact her work made on real people’s lives: “When we began to see the results of our efforts in the form of new drugs which filled real medical needs and benefited patients in very visible ways, our feeling of reward was immeasurable.”Gertrude B.
