Marbled boards. 71 pages. 34 sheets of additional, loose notes. Handwritten label on front cover with original owner’s name and the dates “May 6, 1903” and “April 28, 1904”. Handwritten inscription on title page lists notebook’s owner as a resident at Bethany Orphan’s Home in Womelsdorf, PA. Notebook includes entries for many familiar plant species, though some are identified by colorful “common names” in addition to their proper order, genus, and species: Buttercup, Strawberry, Painted Cup, Violet, Geranium, Star of Bethlehem, Cinque Foil, Robins Plantain, Catnip, Speedwell, Mallow, Rattlesnake Weed, Oxeyed Daisy, Checker Berry, Money Wort. Each entry includes spaces to list observations about the plant, including place and date where found, type of soil in which it grew, height and form of plant, etymology of plant name, geography, propagation techniques, and uses (ornametal, medicinal, etc.) Includes detailed prompts to promote close looking at the plant’s anatomy. The “Glossary of Botanical Terms” on pages 3-7 introduces helpful vocabulary to make accurate observations and descriptions. Glossary lists terms to describe Form of Plan, Apex of Leaf, Venation, Stem Structure, Kind of Flower Cluster, Inflorescence, Attachment of Anthers, Fruit, and Seed-Vessel, among others. Boards lightly worn. Minor toning throughout, moderate on title page. In very good condition. A lovely notebook which shows the academic curiosity and interest in the natural world, of a young female student at the turn of the 20th century.
