Original green cloth over bevelled boards, upper cover with central gilt fern ornament, spine gilt lettered, brown coated endpapers, top edge gilt. Only 1 copy held in academic or institutional collections in the United States. First edition, first printing. “1” and triangle on half-title. "Cambridge: Stereotyped and Printed by Welch, Bigelow, & Co." on page 205. May-Day and Other Pieces is Emerson's second book of poetry, following Poems in 1847; it was his last significant work before his health declined in the 1870s. May-Day includes poems inspired by Emerson's 1858 venture into the wilderness of the Adirondacks to connect with nature among others. Original owner signature in pencil to front pastedown.
