During a trip to England, in 1847, Emerson lectured in the industrial cities, which yielded material for his popular book English Traits (including a chapter on a visit to Stonehenge with Thomas Carlyle) and afforded him renewed contact with Europe's intellectual elite (among them, Dickens, Tennyson, and de Tocqueville).
