ALS : Autograph Letter Signed

Caroline Hazard. President of Wellesley College. Autograph Letter Signed from Caroline Hazard. 3 pages. 4.5 x 6.75 inches. “I remain very truly yours, Caroline Hazard”. On letterhead of Oakwoods, Peace Dale (Rhode Island) on 12 January (no year, but circa 1900). To John E. Bowen, editor of The Independent. In addition to her work in academia, Hazard was a published poet, and here she writes on literary matters: “in regard to a couple of changes in some verses of mine, for an early issue of The Independent. The omission of two lines in ‘Southern Pines’…About the substitution of Mother - for Father, in ‘Renewal’ I am not so sure. It changes the idea entirely…Nature, I perceive, cannot be a father; but it surely can bask in the smile of the All Father…” Hazard served as the fifth President of Wellesley from 1899-1910, and under her leadership the college's enrollment doubled, academic departments were expanded, and faculty salaries were increased. Hazard wrote from Peace Dale, her hometown and birthplace. Remains of prior mounting on (blank) verso; lightly toned; mailing folds. Else in very good condition.
