Photo Album

[Photo Album] [Nurse] Photograph album from a nurse, with images of nurses and doctors in uniform, c. 1920s. Several photographs identify the subjects as doctors; and there are 16 photos of women working in nurses uniforms. Original black cloth boards. 7.25 x 11.5 inches. 100 pages (last 70 pages blank). 63 original silver gelatin print photos, dimensions 2.75 x 3.5 in. Many photos have brief handwritten caption, identifying the subject as “mother,” “Ed,” or “our gang.” Photograph captions do not include location, but 1 image of a building is labeled “Bay View Hospital”. Some photos identify “Drs. Sowers and [Dr.] Orr and Miss Duffy,” “Dr. Burns,” and nurses such as “Mrs. Rehak”. Some photos may be of doctors in the process of working with patients. One photo labelled “Dr. Burns + Walter” shows a young child bathing in a shallow tub, while an adult man crouches next to him and observes. One photos shows what appears to be an operating team of 5 men dressed in white, with surgical caps and face masks puled down around their necks. Many of the medical staff photos show them outside, taking in fresh air and sunshine. In some images, one can see empty patient beds lined up on the outdoor terrace behind the posing nurses. In the early 20th century, fresh air was considered essential for the health, wellbeing, and recovery of sickly people. This hospital was designed with these modern principles regarding patient care in mind. Other photos show family and friends posing with children and pets in various outdoor and rural locations. First four pages detached. Good to very good condition.
