The protesters block the street in the heart of the city to protest for better public education for African-American students, who faced overcrowding and segregated schools. 8 x 10 in. Iconic Chicago hotspots from that era, such as McVicker’s Theater and Tad’s Steakhouse, can be seen in the background of the photo. Original press caption printed above image: “Chicago: Two-hundred civil rights demonstrators were arrested here 6/12 when they stormed from the sidewalk at intersection of State and Madison and staged a mass sit-down. Here demonstrators sit in intersection in front of waiting police van after several were arrested. Demonstrators were marching to City Hall where they wanted to make a personal plea to Mayor Richard Daley to fire Benjamin Willis, Superintendent of Schools.” Stamped on verso “1965 June 12”.
