First Edition

SOCRATES [Jacques Vernet]. Dialogues Socratiques, Ou Instructions Sur Divers Sujets De Morale. 1754 First Edition. Duodecimo. 286 pages. A scarce first edition of Vernet’s Socratic Dialogues, Or Instructions On Various Moral Topics. Socratic dialogues present a discussion of moral and philosophical problems between two or more characters, and may be either dramatic or narrative. These Dialogues were composed for the instruction of the hereditary prince of Saxe-Gotha (likely Ernest II) which was a center of the Enlightenment throughout the 18th century. In good condition. Several 1800s ex libris inscriptions on the final page. Some shelfwear, bumping to corners, and dampstaining to several pages. Small tear to final leaf. Only 2 copies in any US institutions per OCLC worldcat at the time of this writing.
