First English Edition of Carl von Clausewitz, “On War”

CLAUSEWITZ, Carl Von. Translated by Colonel J. J. Graham. Clausewitz’s seminal work was originally published in German from 1832-4, and this is the first English-language edition. London: N. Trübner & Co., 1873. Cover is near contemporary and has gilt badge of the Calvary Club on front cover. A very important and scarce book.

Clausewitz was a Prussian military general, who was active in the Napoleonic Wars (1803-1815). He was a professional soldier, and this work, which was unfinished at the time of his death, contains writings on military strategy as well as philosophies and morals of war. His work was influential for military all who embraced his theory that “war is a mere continuation of policy by other means.” Overall very good condition with some light soiling on covers. This copy was owned by James McCleverty, who was active in the British military; there are some inscriptions in McCleverty’s hand, outlining points in the book about Austria and Prussia, and concluding "thus Clausewitz in 1827, foretold the events of 1914 - very certainly the most remarkable example of prophecy in all Military History."
