Illustrated by 239 portraits engraved on wood by Lossing and Barritt, including frontispiece portrait of the author. 900-page reference book titled Woman's Record; or, Sketches of All Distinguished Women from "the Beginning" till A.D. 1850. Originaly Published in 1853 and updated in this second edition of 1855, this biographical dictionary included entries on more than a thousand women. —she explained that "My object was to prepare a comprehensive and accurate record of what women have accomplished, in spite of the disadvantages of their position, and to illustrate the great truth that woman's mission is to educate and ameliorate humanity."

Encyclopedic volume of 229 notable women throughout history from one of the most influential women's voices at the time. Hale was the well-known editor of the Godey’s Lady’s Book, a leading magazine in the 19th century, which amplified her voice to the national stage. Hale used her platform to support causes such asthe abolition of slavery, to champion women's education initiatives, and advocate for women's property rights. Hale is also known for creating the nursery rhyme “Mary Had a Little Lamb” and for persuading President Lincoln to officially name Thanksgiving as a national holiday. In her role as editor from 1852 Hale created a section headed "Employment for Women" discussing women's attempts to enter the workforce.[10] Hale also published the works of Catharine Beecher, Emma Willard and other early advocates of education for women.Hale became an early advocate of higher education for women,[20] and helped to found Vassar College.[1] Her championship of women's education began as Hale edited the Ladies' Magazine and continued until she retired.
