Signed and inscribed on front free endpaper "Best wishes of Catherine Waugh McCulloch".A short novel written by McCulloch, an activist and lawyer, to highlight the "injustice which results from law as which make fathers sole guardians and custodians of their children" and call attention to a woman’s need for greater protection against abusive or alcoholic husbands. Catharine Gouger Waugh McCulloch was a prominent suffragist, lawyer, and activist. She made history as the first woman elected Justice of the Peace in Illinois, and used her positions to advocate for women's legal rights in marriage and divorce laws. She made national headlines for conducting progressive marriage ceremonies in which she omitted the word "obey" from women's vows to her husband. Very good.
