Female Explorer Mary French-Shelton, Signed book Sultan to Sultan, 1892

Book Signed

May French-Sheldon. Sultan to Sultan. Boston: Arena Publishing Co., 1892. Numbered edition. Certificate No 488. 435 pages. 9 x 7 in. Original red cloth boards with gilt title. Signed and inscribed by author. 26 full-page black and white illustrations, along with over a hundred smaller illustrations throughout. Comes with note inscribed by Mary French-Sheldon dated 1894.

May French-Sheldon traveled to Africa to study the culture's evolutions in language and health; on her return to England she embarked on a lecture tour that promoted the valuable work of women in the sciences and used relics and remains to connect African and European cultures. Her book's inscription hints to the female recipient that reading about scientific adventures may draw other women to their own explorations: "let this be as a hook of steel." Her note, like the title of her book, contains both her English signature and the name given to her by villagers, "Bebe Bwana". Ex-library copy. Light sunning to spine. Four small watermarks on front cover. Very good.
