Original Art

Satirical women’s rights cartoon. C.J. Taylor [Illustrator]. 1894. Kepler & Schwarzmann, Inc. 4 sheets, each 14 in x 10 in. Color illustration titled “Independence Day of the Future” showing three women, including one in a military hat and coat with bloomer pants, ringing a bell labeled “Equal Rights”. A celebratory parade goes on in the background, with two humorous statues towering above the crowds -- an eagle wearing a bonnet and labelled “The American Bird is a Hen Eagle That Lays Eggs”; and another of a standing woman “Erected to the Memory of the First Woman who Wore Breeches”. In two pieces. Very good condition with bright colors. “Puck.” printed at top of image; title and copyright information printed at bottom. An excellent piece of history capturing some of the fears and anxieties related to the growing women’s rights movement.
