Roger Ascham. “The English Works of Roger Ascham, Preceptor to Queen Elizabeth.” Printed for T. Davies, in Russell-Street, Convent-Garden, and J. Dodsley, in Pall-Mall. 1761. Roger Ascham was an English scholar who tutored Princess Elizabeth in Latin and Greek for two years from 1548 to 1550. In the dedication on page 4, Bennet writes that “Ascham was not only the chief ornament of a celebrated college, but visited foreign countries, frequented courts, and lived in familiarity with statesmen and princes; not only instructed scholars in literature, but formed Elizabeth to empire.” Containing, I. A report of the affairs of Germany, and the Emperor Charles'scourt. II. Toxophilus, or the school of shooting. III. The schoolmaster, or perfect way of bringing up youth, illustrated by the late learned Mr. Upton. IV. Letters to Queen Elizabeth and others, now first published from the manuscripts. With notes and observations, and the author's life. By James Bennet, master of the boarding-school of Hoddesdon in Hertfordshire. Beautifully bound with leather and gilt. Half morocco with gilt detail on covers. Gilt lettering on spine. Good condition with some volumes wear to ends of spine, but bright interiors otherwise.
