Two volumes in one small octavo. Contemporary mottled calf, gilt spine with burgundy morocco label. Binding extremities rubbed, old ink signature on a preliminary blank page. At the time that this description is being written, only one copy recorded in American institutions. OCLC search results are at best an estimate and can vary over time. This is a very good copy with light foxing on first pages, followed by clean and bright interior. Madame Pompadour was a member of the French court at Versailles and the official mistress to King Louis XV from 1745-1751. Includes interesting comments relating to French presence in Canada and their conflict with the British. It is not clear if the authorship is truly Madame the Pompadour. An uncommon early reprint of this famous memoir first published a few years earlier in 1766.
