“Be kind to the children of others- Julia Ward Howe"

AQS

Howe, Julia Ward. Autograph quote signed. Influential women’s suffragist, abolitionist, and poet Julia Ward Howe handwrites this verse of kindness from one of her poems. She writes, “then spoke the angel of mothers / To me, in gentle tone: / “Be kind to the children of others, / and thus deserve thine own.”

Howe first gained renown after writing the lyrics to American patriotic song “Battle Hymn of the Republic,” which quickly became one of the most popular songs in the Union during the Civil War. An elegant and engaging writer, Howe was the first woman elected into the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1908. By that time, she had established herself as not only a poet, but as a leading women’s suffragist, having founded the women’s suffrage movement with Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton. She was a staunch abolitionist and advocated prison reform and international peace in essays and lectures, such as in this handwritten verse, which instructs everyone to be kind to others and therefore you too will deserve kindness. It is signed Julia Ward Howe, Jan. 15th 1887. Near fine condition, small pencil marking on upper left corner, but no text affected, and there are no stains or tears on paper, in excellent condition for a 19th century piece. One of Julia Ward Howe’s most beautiful verses, written here in her own hand.
