Photo Archive

3 photos of women working in scientific laboratories in the decade before World War II. Despite the obstacles, these press photos document three women excelling in their field before World War II opened new opportunities for women in the sciences. Press photos on silver gelatin print. 5”x7” to 8”x10” photo size. One photo mounted on slightly larger paper.

One photo shows a woman in 1929 operating a noise machine at the Colgate laboratory. Another photo shows Toda Kuniko, the only Japanese woman in the medical and chemical field, holding test tubes and wearing a lab coat in the laboratory. Another photograph is from 1924 and shows Theresa Karger, Chief of the Chemical Laboratory of the Mt. Alto US Veteran’s Hospital, wearing a lab coat and sitting in front of a microscope. All photos in near fine condition. Rare 1920s photos of women succeeding in the sciences before World War II.
