The 19th Amendment passed nationwide women’s suffrage into law on June 4, 1919, after a campaign lasting for over 50 years. The press surrounding the suffrage movement intensified as it grew ever closer to being a reality. This archive includes a press photo portrait of suffrage leader Rosalie Jones, who led suffrage hikes from New York to Washington. This 1927 press photo is announcing her marriage to Democratic senator C.C. Dill. Also included is a press photo portrait of Anna Stone, who in the byline verso is noted as being the “oldest” suffragist at age 102, and also the oldest women voter in the first national election following ratification of the 19th Amendment. This press photo is dated from that first election in 1920. The final press photo shows the first delegates of the National Woman’s Party arriving in Washington and bearing their state emblems in 1921. The National Woman’s Party was a major organ of the suffrage movement, and following ratification, pivoted immediately to campaigning for an Equal Rights amendment. Portions of this amendment were finally passed in the 1960s under the Equal Pay Act. All 3 photos bear assorted stamps and bylines verso, along with pencil notations. Photos are in good condition with scattered creases to edges, excepting the original paint added by the news department to highlight or edit the subjects of the photos.
