[Women's History] Original Carte-de-Visite Photograph of a woman in full military uniform, holding a sword. Washington DC: Ulke Bros, 1873. Measures approximately 2.5" x 4" inches. The woman is in a poorly fitted Military Uniform of a United States Naval Captain from the mid-19th century. The photographer Henry and Julian Ulke, otherwise known as the Ulke Bros., had a portrait studio in Washington DC. For 40 years, Henry painted portraits of a series of American politicians, scientists and noteworthy individuals, earning the name the 'Painter of Presidents.' Remainder of pencil signature on verso, partially erased. Scarce and in very good condition.Item #15970
