Large Commemoration--An African American WWII Solder Achieves the Roll of Honor

Poster

[Military] [African American] [World War II]. Roll of Honor, World's Great War for Freedom. Woodmere, NY: George J. Mayer, circa 1945. 19.5" x 15.5" inches, serving as frame for an original color photograph of a soldier, 5 x 3 1/4 inches oval to sight, and completed in manuscript with the soldier's name; some edge wear; not examined out of period frame. Bennie E. Byard (1919-2002), the holder of this patriotic display certificate, was a resident of coastal Glynn County, GA who enlisted in June 1943. Byard looks coolly out at the viewer with a cigarette dangling out of his mouth. His portrait is surrounded by the flags of the USA on one side, and the British and Soviet flags combined into one mass on the other side. The words "Liberty and Justice" are printed at the bottom of the poster. Comes with a reprinted copy of Byard's enlistment record. Commemoration of a black soldier's service in this form is very scarce. In very good condition.
