Large format newspaper, 4 pages. 21" by 15 ½" inches. A single issue of this newspaper, featuring a letter from Ralph Waldo Emerson to President Martin Van Buren regarding the Cherokee Indians.

Emerson argued against the removal of the Cherokee Indians from their land, citing moral reasons as well as calling the 1835 treaty which was used to remove the Cherokees, a 'sham treaty.' As well as citing popular protests against the removal, Emerson makes an effort to portray the Cherokees as a civilization worthy of respect, countering the then popular notion of Native Americans as inferior. Good condition. Newspaper folded in quarters, with heavy fold creases present, and additional creases from later folding. Separation most of the length of the left margin/folding edge, still holding with about 4 inches at the bottom. General moderate uneven browning, minor foxing and a few small tears. Left edge a bit rough along the torn portion. This newspaper cites the letter having been previously published in an issue of the Yeoman's Gazette, with the letter first written on April 23rd of this same year, 1838.
