Emerson, Ralph Waldo. Autograph Letter Signed, 10 September 1873. Written during the later years of Emerson’s life, this 1873 letter offers insight into the personal and familial networks that sustained one of the central figures of American Transcendentalism and nineteenth-century reform thought. Composed from Gosnold, Massachusetts, just days before the marriage of Sylvia Watson to his cousin William Ralph Emerson, the letter reflects Emerson’s continued engagement in intimate social circles even as his public intellectual authority was firmly established. His warm salutation, “My Dear Miss Sylvia,” and closing, “With sincere regard & affection, Your Friend, R. Waldo Emerson,” reveal a tone of personal affection rather than philosophical abstraction.
