Author Hannah Gould Manuscript Signed of her Poem "A Name in the Sand"

[Women Authors] Gould, Hannah. 1 page Manuscript Signed from 7 October 1845. In her hand, Gould pens her poem "A Name in the Sand," lending female perspective to the notion of temporality and authorial fame so often discussed by Shakespeare and Keats.

In her hand in part, Gould writes: "Alone I walked the ocean strand/ A pearly shell was in my hand/ I stooped and write upon the sand/ My name-the year-the day./ As onward from the spot I passed/ One lingering look behind I cast/ A wave came willing high and fast/ And washed the lines away./ And so methought twill shortly be/ With every mark on earth from me/ A wave of dark oblivion's sea/ Will sweep across the place/ Where I have trod the shore…"

An interesting and unique piece documenting a woman poet's entry into the consideration of the ephemeral nature of authorship and life.
