Catt writes in her hand a moving quote, "Despite crime, war and bloodshed, the human race is marching toward a better world." She signs in full “Carrie Chapman Catt”.Already active in the movement for woman suffrage, Catt rose to prominence with her 1895 appointment as chairman of the organization committee for field work of the National American Woman Suffrage Association. Five years later, she succeeded Susan B. Anthony as president of the Association, and in 1904 helped found the International Woman Suffrage Alliance, whose president she remained until 1923.Catt served as president of National American Woman Suffrage Association from 1915 on, and it was her leadership, organizational skills, and “Winning Plan” that finally resulted in the successful adoption of the 19th Amendment in 1920. After that victory, Catt continued to work for woman suffrage on an international level, and she was active in movements for world peace and disarmament.
