Pierre Jules Mêne was a French Sculptor and "animalier." He is considered the pioneer of animal sculpture in the 19th century. His favorite subject was horses, of which he was considered a master at portraying. Mêne specialized in small, high quality bronze figures. After his death, his foundry was run for a short time by his son in law, then his models were sold to the foundry of Susse Freres, which continued to produce Mêne's bronze. Mêne is considered to have been the lost-wax casting expert of his time, later surpassed only by Auguste Rodin.
