An Important Expedition on the Gulf States and Persia Iran Discussing Hawk-Hunting, Muhammad ibn 'Abd al-Wahhab and Wahhabi Islam in the Arabian Gulf coast from Ras al-Khaimah, Qatar, Bahrain, & Sheeraz

First Edition

WARING, Edward Scott. A Tour to Sheeraz, by the Route of Kazroon and Feerozabad; with various remarks on the manners, customs, laws, language, and literature of the Persians. London, W. Bulmer for T. Cadell & W. Davies 1807. Folio. 329 pages. 1/4 leather bound , Original binding.

Second edition, revised (first edition 1804). Waring, an officer of the East India Company provides a narrative for an expedition to Shiraz in 1802, by way of the Persian Gulf. Waring presents an important survey of Persia both past and present. His account includes discussions on hawk-hunting, Arabian horses, an early account of Muhammad ibn 'Abd al-Wahhab and Wahhabi Islam, and pearl fishing along the Gulf coast from Ras al-Khaimah, Qatar, Bahrain, all the way to Kuwait. A keen observer and a competent linguist, his work touches on the great Persian epics, along with extensive excerpts from Hafiz, Sa'adi, and Sufism. Waring work is compelling for its descriptions of the customs and manners of Persian society, and the succinct Persian history of the final chapters. Though this is the second edition, Waring himself notes (p. vi) that the Bombay first edition was so riddled with errors as to demand an improved edition. Front board deatched but present, text block solid, writing to both front and rear pastedowns. Staining and water damage throughout. The 2 plates called for are absent but this book is very rare and covers some aspects of life in Iran and the Gulf States that is not found easily elsewhere. In good condition.
