TLS : Typed Letter Signed

42nd US President. Bill Clinton Typed Letter Signed, one page, 8.5 x 11", State Of Arkansas letterhead, July 12, 1989. While governor, Clinton responds to a supporter and comments on the U.S. Supreme Court's decision on flag burning. In part, Clinton writes, "Thank you for your letter regarding your concern about the threat of a local man to burn our flag. I, too, was deeply alarmed with the recent United States Supreme Court decision regarding the burning of our flag…I am pleased that this manner has resolved itself, at least for the present time. We can now begin to put together an appropriate legal response to this incredible Supreme Court decision which will inspire and insure respect for our flag and what it stands for, while protecting our First Amendment rights." Signed at the bottom "Bill Clinton". Clinton was referring to the case of Texas vs. Johnson, 491 U.S. 397 (1989), in which the Supreme Court held that Gregory Johnson's prior conviction for flag desecration was unconstitutional as it was expressive conduct, protected by the Constitution and the 1st Amendment. Under Clinton's Presidency, Congress tried on several occasions, but was unsuccessful in each instance, in passing legislation making flag burning a crime. Lot includes the original mailing envelope. In excellent condition.
