"Dewey Defeats Truman" 1948 Famous Chicago Tribune Newspaper

Chicago Tribune famous issue that erroneously announces Truman's presidential defeat. As we all know, Truman actually won and this is the most famous journalistic mistake of the century. The date is November 3, 1948. The headline reads: ""Dewey Defeats Truman"" . This is one of the most sought-after papers by collectors because most of the issues were taken off the stands when the Tribune realized its error. Only 2000 were estimated to have reached private hands and most have disappeared since 1948. Unusually nice at the fold, with just a slight bit of wear at the spine (minor wear which does not impact the text). This issue is missing a small piece from the top left blank margin, but is only minimally noticeable since the margin on the page underneath is also blank. The issue did have a tear running through the top left portion, but it has been archivally mended. The issue includes a deluxe gift portfolio for presentation & safe keeping.

Richard Nixon Typed Letter Signed Mentioned Alger Hiss

37th President. Typed letter signed, one page, quarto. New Jersey, April 12, 1991, on personal letterhead, to Honorable William Hyland. In full: "Dear Bill, Talk about going into the lion's den. I thought you would like to see a list of those who attended an off-the-record appearance I made at a Carnegie Endowment forum in Washington Wednesday. I guess they thought that by having me they would balance the fact that Alger Hiss was once their President! Sincerely,". During the Red Scare of the 40's and 50's, Alger Hiss was accused of secretly being a Communist while in federal service. After Hiss appeared before Congress and denied being a Communist, Nixon, a Congressman at the time, pressed the Committee to continue the investigation. Hiss was found guilty of two counts of perjury. In a curious way, the reputation of Alger Hiss was permanently linked to that of Richard Nixon. The Nixon-haters have always been eager to exonerate Hiss while Nixon's fans are usually convinced of Alger's guilt as a spy. When Nixon was doing well, for example, when he was Vice-President and when he was a popular President during his first term, Hiss's reputation suffered a decline. When Nixon did poorly as after his disastrous run for governor and especially during and after the Watergate crisis, more people thought of Hiss as an innocent victim. "File" notation in blue marker at the top right, otherwise in excellent condition. In over 2 decades it's the only Nixon letter we have ever seen mentioning Alger Hiss.

Woodrow Wilson Presidential Letter Signed about "critical and difficult matters" during World War I

28th U.S. President. Typed Letter Signed as president, one page, 7.25"" x 9"", White House letterhead, February 20, 1918. Wilson went before Congress in January 1918, to enunciate American war aims-- His famous Fourteen Points speech. In it he established the basis of a peace treaty and the foundation of a League of Nations. Following this speech Wilson was criticized by some opponents. A few weeks latter Wilson writes in our letter of his ""critical and difficult matters"" Wilson writes as President : ""I appreciate very warmly your kind letter of February eighteenth. It is very gratifying to have such assurances of your approval of my action in a critical and difficult matter."" Wilson's Fourteen Points are important for several reasons. First of all, they translated many of the principles of America into foreign policy: Notions of free trade, open agreements and democracy. Second, the Fourteen Points constituted the only statement by any of the belligerents of their war aims. They thus became the basis for German surrender, and the only criteria by which to judge the peace treaty. Wilson argued that morality and ethics had to be the basis for the foreign policy of a democratic society. Many did not agree with him and his League of nation eventually failed, but the recipient of our letter did agree and endorse his vision. In very good condition, with moderate brushing to signature and letter affixed to a slightly larger sheet of paper.
